Eventually Dodgson was persuaded to submit the work to Macmillan and Co., Kingsley’s publisher, with illustrations by John Tenniel. Dodgson came up with a pen name that suited him and his witty tale, ‘Lewis Carroll’. It was a pun, inevitably – and one that his co
